My mum was diagnosed with dementia just over three years ago. Like many families, we didn’t fully notice the changes at first. Dementia doesn’t arrive overnight—it creeps in quietly. One small thing forgotten, then another. And before we knew it, she was no longer able to live entirely independently.
What she needed wasn’t round-the-clock care. It was companionship, routine, and someone she trusted nearby. She needed help remembering where things were, company on her daily walks, assistance with preparing meals and shopping—small things, but things that made a big difference. Most of all, she didn’t want to be alone at night. That’s when her anxiety peaked.
We spoke with social services, Admiral Nurses, Dementia Friends, and charities. We found some wonderful people, but what struck us most was the gap between full-time care and complete independence. There was very little support for people like my mum—people who didn’t need a carer, but who couldn’t safely or happily live alone either.
The services we found were either too rigid, too expensive, or too limited. There was no flexible solution for our specific needs.
And that’s when the idea for The Care Share Solution was born.
We imagined a service that felt more like community and less like care. A model built on trust, safety, and warmth. A way to match people like my mum with carefully vetted companions who could live in the home and provide up to 15 hours a week of support, in exchange for affordable accommodation. But when that had reached its limit the ability to turn that up into a more comprehensive service with a part or full time care resource.
